In a timer-controlled tumble-action washing machine, the basket is rotated continuously and the washing liquid heated until the temperature of the liquid reaches a value above which foam produced by the continuous rotation impairs the washing action after which the basket motor is alternately energized and de-energized by switching means to prevent excessive foaming. The switching means is a bimetallic member, having a heater in parallel with the basket motor, in the particular embodiment, but may alternatively be a motor-driven switch. During washing the liquid is heated to 195 DEG F., motor operation being intermittent until 140 DEG F. is reached, then continuous for 12 minutes (taking the temperature to about 160 DEG F), then intermittent. During intermittent operation, the basket rotation may be unidirectional or bidirectional. |
