PURPOSE: An impact detecting apparatus and a method thereof are provided to detect not only impacts, but also location of the impacts, impulse, and deformation of the outer shape due to the impacts. CONSTITUTION: An impact detecting apparatus(100) comprises a sensor unit(110) and an impact detecting unit(120). The sensor unit comprises multiple acceleration sensors(111~114) installed in an impact detection object(10). The impact detecting unit comprises a location information storing unit(121), a calculating unit(122), a determining unit(123), and an impact information storing unit(124). The location information storing unit stores vector information about a distance and a direction angle between the multiple acceleration sensors or coordinate information about each installation coordinate of the multiple acceleration sensors. The calculating unit receives acceleration information of each location from the multiple acceleration sensors and calculates the expected acceleration at a specific point. The determining unit receives information about the expected acceleration of a third acceleration sensor(113) from the calculating unit and receives information about a measured acceleration measured by the third acceleration sensor from the sensor unit. The impact detecting unit calculates the quantity of an impact acting on the third acceleration sensor through the difference between the expected acceleration and the measured acceleration of the third acceleration sensor. The impact information storing unit stores impact information and provides an impact detection signal to a user.
