A tubular carton for fragile articles, in particular electronic components, is made from a single blank and has internal article retaining and cushioning means comprising wall portions 50a, 60a hingedly connected to two opposed side walls 16a, 20a and spaced both from one another and from the side edges of the carton. The carton is adapted to be erected from a flat-form which, in the embodiment of Fig. 2, is achieved by folding the blank and securing flaps 46a, 62a to side wall 16a and intermediate panel 56a to side wall 20a. The cushioning means are formed by slitting and scoring wall portions 50a, 60a to produce a series of hinged flaps 74a, 80a, 88a and 90a and are such that the article is held spaced from the side walls and ends of the carton and cannot be withdrawn from the lower end of the carton, as disposed in Fig. 2, without damage thereto. Flaps 88a may be formed adjacent both ends and in a modification they are extended so as to be pressed inwardly when the adjacent end of the carton is closed. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, a rectangular retaining means is formed by wall portions 112a, 114a and a central portion 108a pressed out therefrom. A leg 104a, Fig. 11, may extend across and adjacent one end of the carton to support the article therefrom. In a modification the wall portions 112a, 114a extend from one end for about half the length of the carton only.</p> |
