A cell for producing chlorine by electrolysis of brine has a cathode support disposed vertically or at an angle of up to 30% to the vertical and provided with a flowing mercury cathode film and an adjacent parallel anode of titanium coated with platinum, rhodium, iridium, or an alloy consisting of two or more of these metals. The electrodes may be planar, cylindrical or cone frusta with the cathode inside the anode or between anodes which may be perforated. Mercury is fed by a pipe passing up inside the cathode support and brine may be fed to submerge the electrodes or if the anode is imperforate the brine may be confined within it except at the bottom where it forms a pool over the amalgamated mercury. Provision is made for removal of evolved gas, amalgam and brine. If the electrodes are cone frusta, the electrode spacing may be varied by raising or lowering the outer (anode) electrode. Several cells may be arranged their anode, brine and mercury supply and removal and gas removal connections in parallel, the cathode connection being made in the mercury supply.
|
