PURPOSE: A method for processing a 3D caption and a caption processing unit using the same are provided to calculate a caption disparity corresponding to a difference between a maximal disparity value and a disparity average value of a caption display part, thereby minimizing a 3D image of hiding a caption. CONSTITUTION: A caption processing unit calculates a disparity map from 3D image data by using a disparity calculation algorithm(S101). The caption processing unit calculates a disparity average value of a caption display part in the disparity map(S102). The caption processing unit calculates a maximal disparity value of the caption display part. When a difference of the maximal disparity value and the disparity average value is smaller than a predetermined threshold value, the caption processing unit calculates a caption disparity by using the disparity average value(S103,S105).
