摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool including a hard coating layer which exhibits excellent peel resistance in high-speed intermittent cutting. <P>SOLUTION: The surface coated cutting tool is formed of a hard coating layer including a Ti compound layer as a lower layer and an &alpha; type Al<SB POS="POST">2</SB>O<SB POS="POST">3</SB>layer as an upper layer, by vapor deposition. The upper layer includes: columnar crystal particles vertically grown in the layer thickness direction; and granular crystal particles having 50-500 nm of average grain size. In a portion immediately above the lower layer and in the upper layer on a lower layer side (for example, a depth region from an interface between the lower layer and the upper layer to 1 &mu;m to the upper layer side), a columnar-granular mixed structure is formed, where granular crystal particles exist in gaps between the columnar crystal particles not adjacent to each other.
