The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0944509/C2/1> in which X and Y are aryl radicals, R4 represents ethylene or propylene radicals or mixtures thereof, n is a number of at least one and m is an integer from 1 to 5; and a process for their preparation by reacting a 2,2-bis-(hydroxyaryl) ethanol with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or mixtures thereof at a temperature of from 110 DEG to 170 DEG C. in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. Examples describe the reaction of 2,2-bis(hydroxyphenyl) ethanol with 6 mols propylene oxide, 2,2-bis-(methyl-hydroxyphenyl) ethanol with 9 mols ethylene oxide and 2,2-bis-(trihydroxyphenyl) ethanol with 8 mols ethylene oxide and 8 mols propylene oxide.
