PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for encoding an image, and a method and apparatus for decoding an image.

SOLUTION: The image encoding method hierarchically encodes an input image on the basis of a unified image compression format without regard to whether the input image is a two-dimensional image, a stereo image, or a three-dimensional image. Next, an encoded bit stream generated through the encoding is transmitted to the image decoding apparatus.
