<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical component, a diffraction grating, an optical lowpass filter, and a manufacturing method thereof, in which a pattern in a refractive index change area, which enables thinning to be achieved, energy consumption in pulse laser processing to be reduced and processing time to be shortened, is formed inside a transparent material. <P>SOLUTION: An optical component 100 has a refractive index change area 150 inside a transparent material 170.
