The method involves detecting and mathematically differentiating a spatially-resolved force path of shaping force during creation of a folded edge (FK). A damage (B1) at a position at the folded edge is detected when a given threshold value in the differentiated force path exceeds, where the position corresponds with a position in the differentiated force path. The force path of the shaping force is determined from contact pressure and electrical motor current of a folding device. An independent claim is also included for a device for detection of damages at folded edges.
