<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide additional HGF modulators that can be used as therapeutic and diagnostic agents. <P>SOLUTION: The invention is based, in part, upon the discovery of a family of binding proteins that specifically bind HGF, in particular, human HGF. The binding proteins are antibody-based in so far as they contain antigen (i.e., HGF) binding sites based on the CDRs of a family of antibodies that specifically bind HGF. The present invention provides a family of binding proteins that bind and neutralize the activity of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), in particular human HGF. The binding proteins can be used as diagnostic and/or therapeutic agents.
