947,680. Milling machines. GARDNERDENVER CO. June 20, 1962 [Feb. 19, 1962], No. 23684/62. Heading B3K. A method of milling spaced grooves having re-entrant crest edges, on a blank, comprises traversing the blank past a pair of cutters, and forming opposite crest edges of a given groove during successive traversals. The blank 53 is centred between a tailstock 48 and a dividing head 52 mounted on a table 42, slidable on a support 40, which is pivotable on a saddle 38, which in turn is slidable on a vertically adjustable knee 36. Table 42 is movable by a lead screw which also rotates the blank by means of a gear-box 58. Cutters 76, 78 are mounted on an arbor 66 by spacers 68, 82, and the cutting inserts are clamped by wedges 90. Table 42 is set to the required angle relative to the cutters, and the table is fed past the cutters with the blank rotating. Cutter 76 forms flank 22-24 of one groove 14, Fig. 5, and cutter 78 forms the flank 26-28 of a second groove. The blank is indexed and tool forms flank 22-24 of the second groove with tool 78 moving to the next groove. Indexing is continued to finish all of the grooves which have re-entrant crests as dimension D is less than dimension D<SP>1</SP>. |
