The present application relates to a process for the preparation of lactones by enzymatic oxidation of lactols. The lactones, produced thus may be useful for the synthesis of statins, including but not limited to, cerivastatin, pitavastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin etc. The present application also relates to a crystalline form of (4R,6S)-6-(chloromethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2,4-diol (2a). |
