<p>PURPOSE: A banknote management method of an automatic teller machine through banknote serial number recognition and the automatic teller machine adapting the same are provided to prevent market circulation of banknotes whose serial number is not specific, by classifying and keeping banknotes with unclear serial number in a non-reflux cassette when the serial number thereof is not recognized clearly even though the banknote is judged to be genuine. CONSTITUTION: A visual light image of an inserted banknote is read using visible lights of red, green and blue, and an infrared reflection image and an infrared transmission image of the inserted banknote are read(S100). The read visible light image is converted into low resolution established lower than the read resolution. Differentiation process of banknote type and counterfeit-bill for the inserted banknote is performed using the visible light image converted into low resolution, the infrared reflection image and the infrared transmission image(S210). Serial number recognition process for the inserted banknote is performed using the read visible light image(S220). A serial number acquired by the serial number recognition process and the banknote type and counterfeit-bill differentiation result data obtained by the banknote type and counterfeit-bill differentiation process are stored in a database by being matched with transaction data of a corresponding financial transaction(S230, S240, S300 and S400). Genuine banknote whose serial number is recognized clearly is returned to a reflux cassette, and genuine banknote whose serial number is not recognized clearly is returned to a non-reflux cassette. Counterfeit-bill or banknotes suspected as a counterfeit bill are returned to a counterfeit-bill cassette.
