PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device which can increase the number of areas capable of individually controlling correspondent light sources without increasing the number of LED packages, and an image display device using the same.

SOLUTION: One embodiment of the present invention provides a backlight device used for a display device, which comprises a plurality of LED packages provided corresponding to each of areas in which a display area of the display device is divided into a plurality of areas, a single light guide plate 103 for diffusing emitted light to the divided area corresponding to the LED packages and a backlight control part 601 for controlling lighting of the LED packages, wherein the LED packages 102 include switches for switching LEDs of a plurality of systems connected in parallel and an LED for emitting light, and the backlight control part 601 controls the switches so that the LEDs of the plurality of systems are turned on in each division period obtained by dividing a frame period of the display device.
