<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and light weight motor drive unit independent from the power supply conditions at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: A motor drive unit 20 includes: an inverter circuit 22 that receives an AC power 1 from the outside and converts the same into a power with a desired frequency to drive a motor 8 externally connected thereto; a storage battery 14 connected to the I/O side of the inverter circuit 22; and a control unit 15 having control functions that, when driving the motor 8, drives the motor 8 through the inverter circuit 22 by using the power from the storage battery 14 or a power from an external AC power 1; and when charging the storage battery 14, outputs a DC power to one phase of the outputs in the inverter circuit 22 to charge the storage battery 14 using the DC power.
