The system has a control program (12) operable by a processing unit (11) and assigned to a device module (9). Functional modules of the device module for communication between a field device (F1) and a control- and/or operating unit (1) are deactivated during connection with field buses (4, 5). The processing unit recognizes a communication error on the buses over the program. The functional modules are activated during connection of the device module with the field device that is decoupled from the buses. The processing unit recognizes an error function of the field device over the program. The processing unit is formed as a personal computer, a laptop and a smart phone. An independent claim is also included for a method for securing an availability of a bus system in an automation system.
