<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device and a display device capable of obtaining high brightness. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting device is provided with an illumination optical system generating illumination light and a lens sheet for narrowing a divergence angle of the illumination light. The illumination optical system is provided with a first transparent substrate and a second transparent substrate arranged separated from and in opposition to each other and a light source for irradiating light on either the first transparent substrate or the second transparent substrate. The illumination optical system is fitted in a gap of the first transparent substrate and the second transparent substrate, and is equipped with an optical modulation layer showing scattering property or transparency against light from the light source, in accordance with the size of an electric field. The illumination optical system generates an electric field for producing a plurality of linear scattering regions in the optical modulation layer in a three-dimensional display mode, and at the same time, has an electrode for generating an electric field for producing a planar scattering region in the optical modulation layer in a two-dimensional display mode. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
