<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce stress on a worker due to heat generated by an internal combustion engine of a power source of a backpack work machine. <P>SOLUTION: A cooling air passage for forced cooling around an engine 14 and an exhaust muffler 38, constituted of a cover member 12 includes: a first air passage 62 extending along an intake-side of a cylinder block 18; a second air passage 64 extending along a recoil starter 32 side of the cylinder block 18; a third air passage 66 extending along an exhaust side of the cylinder block 18; and an outlet passage 70 partitioned from the third air passage 66 by a partition plate 52. A junction part 72 of the second air passage 64 and the third air passage 66 has a shape bulging outward.
