The method involves injecting fuel into cylinders (11-14) through respective injection valves (114,124,134,144). The fuel is injected into the cylinder (12) and not injected into the cylinder (11), when operating the engine (1) at partial operating mode. The fuel is injected into both the cylinders after switching the engine to full operating mode. The ignition of the cylinder (11) is activated before switching the engine to full operating mode and before opening the exhaust valve (113) of the cylinder (11), so fuel from the inherent leakage from the injection valve (114) is burned. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for operating internal combustion engine; (2) a data carrier storing program for operating internal combustion engine; and (3) a control device for operating internal combustion engine.
