An image signal brightness stretch unit (6) stretches the image signal according to the light emission quantity or the brightness distribution of the input image signal. A mapping unit (7) carries out mapping of the image signal by reducing the brightness of the parts without light emission. Therefore, the part of the input image signal that can be seen as emitting light is enhanced by brightness stretching of the backlight and stretching of the image signal.</p>
