PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To successfully employ an induction welding technique, which has been limited to joining of simple single walled cylindrical petroleum piping, to join a complicated piston structure so as to attain a strong, high integrity joint with a uniform but minimal heat-affected zone across the entire interface of the joining surfaces.
SOLUTION: A piston particularly adapted for heavy-duty diesel engine is fabricated from separate parts having circumferentially extending joining surfaces that are heated prior to bonding to an elevated temperature sufficient to enable bonding of the joining surfaces. Thereafter, the joining surfaces are brought into contact with one another and twisted to attain a permanent metal weld at the interface of the joining surfaces.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
