The present invention relates to a multi-core optical fiber and bi-directional optical communication method applicable to an optical transmission line for bi-directional optical communication. The multi-core optical fiber has a plurality of cores within a common cladding. At an arbitrary core among the plurality of cores, an optical signal is transmitted in a first direction, whereas at all cores at a closest position with respect to the arbitrary core, an optical signal is transmitted in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
