A method for observing stem cells with an observation device (1) is provided with: a step for disposing stem cells (C) in a dish (11); a step for loading the dish (11) onto a waveguide (21) via water (13); a step for inputting illuminating light (L1) into the waveguide (21) and outputting that illuminating light (L1) via the water (13) toward the stem cells (C) within the dish (11); and a step in which the illuminating light (L1) that has been output toward the stem cells (C) is scattered by the stem cells (C) and that scattered light (L2), which has passed through the waveguide (21), is detected. Furthermore, in an image that is detected by means of the scattered light (L2), regions that are remarkably darker than other parts are distinguished as being in a state tending towards differentiation.
