A motor vehicle body encompasses a front hood or bonnet 1 with an outer skin 6 and a stiffening layer 7 arranged under the outer skin and attached thereto, and an actuator 12 for lifting up the front hood during an accident, which is accommodated in a recess 10 in the stiffening layer. The recess may be located at a rear edge of the hood, and may comprise a cut out section of the stiffening layer. The actuator may comprise an inflatable elastic membrane similar to an airbag, and it may expand in such a way that the rear side is more expandable so that it covers a lower region of an adjacent windscreen (figure 8). The actuator raises the hood in the event of a collision so that said hood is further spaced from any underlying structures. By locating the actuator in a recess in the stiffening layer it reduces the effect it has on placing other fixtures in proximity to the rear edge of the hood.
