Determining drill string status based on hook load and pressure data

A method for determining a status of a drill string in a wellbore involves obtaining pressure data and hook load data for the drill string. The pressure data is filtered to obtain pressure sections and a low pressure threshold is determined based upon the pressure sections. The hook load data is filtered to obtain hook load sections and hook load baselines are determined based upon the hook load sections. Dynamic thresholds are determined based upon the hook load baselines and an in-slips status of the drill string is determined based upon the low pressure threshold, the dynamic thresholds, or both.
