In a communication system each base station is configured to provide synchronisation signals in each radio frame of both a primary (backwards compatible) component carrier (CC) and a secondary (extension) component carrier. The location of the synchronisation signals in the radio frame of the primary (backwards compatible) component carrier are fixed whilst for the secondary (extension) component carrier the location is configurable. The configurable location of synchronisation signals allows neighbouring base stations and base stations whose cells share a common geographic area and/or frequency band to avoid inter-cell interference. In one embodiment, the relative positions of Primary and Secondary Synchronisation Signals (PSS/SSS) may also be swapped compared to the positions used for the primary component carrier. The configurable location used for the signals is communicated to a mobile communication device and may take the form of an index from which the location can be derived. The index may be based on cell identity (ID). |
