In an apparatus for supporting a moving web in spaced relationship to a surface over which it is passing, jets of air or other gaseous medium issue in opposite directions parallel to the direction of feed from ports 3a, 3b in ducts 2 forming parts of the support surface, the air being extracted through ports 4 in a number of separate streams. In one form, Fig. 1, the exhaust ports 4 are between the ducts 2 and have cover-plates 5 with apertures 6 through which the air passes. According to another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), a single supply duct 9 is provided, and exhaust ports 10, situated between pairs of oppositely-facing jet ports 8a, 8b extend through the duct 9. The total area of the apertures 6 is 50-90% of the area of the port 4. Further, the total area of the exhaust openings may be 5 to 20 times the total area of the jet ports. The support surface may be above or below the web and may be inclined to the horizontal.</p> |
