A vacuum cleaner includes a body, a suction generator and a dirt collection vessel both carried on the body. The dirt collection vessel includes an arcuate sidewall (54, fig 5) , a tangentially directed inlet (48, fig 4), an axially directed outlet, a dirt collection chamber and a shroud provided between the dirt collection chamber and the axially directed outlet. The shroud 106 includes a filter surface 112 having a plurality of air flow apertures 114 and a helical step 116 extending around the shroud 106 through the filter surface 112. The shroud 106 preferably includes a lip 108 and a skirt 110 with the step 116 engaging the lip 108 adjacent the tangentially directed inlet (48, fig 4). The filter surface 112 is preferably on a first side of the helical step 116 and a second portion remains unrecessed on a second side of the helical step 116. The arcuate side wall (54, fig 5) of the dirt collection vessel may include a step (120, fig 5) which is provided adjacent the skirt 110.
