960,187. Mixing in conduits. ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. Sept. 28, 1962 [Oct. 2, 1961], No. 36855/62. Heading B1C. A mixer or conduit 1 for a polymer melt has a heating jacket 2, and an additive (e.g. a pigment dispersion, plasticizer or release agent) is introduced under pressure by way of conduit 11, needle valve 13 and the conduit 9; the latter increases in cross-section as it approaches the main stream, and its narrower end is cooled by exposure to ambient temperature outside the heating jacket 2. Should the flow pressure of the additive fall, the polymer will flow up the channel 9 and solidify forming a solid plug preventing further penetration ; the plug will be ejected and melt when the additive flow is re-established. A cooling jacket or cooling fins may be provided on the housing to cool the channel 9. The materials may be supplied by metering pumps. When the needle valve 13 is closed as shown, the additive is by-passed through the conduit 12.
|
