An inking cylinder for a stencil 118 comprises a hollow cylindrical body formed by a shell 76 and a sleeve 102 and arranged with its longitudinal axis extending substantially vertically and having its interior divided into a vertical series of compartments 80, overflow tubes 82 establishing communication between adjacent compartments 80 so that they are filled with ink in successively descending order by ink supplied to the uppermost compartment 80 from a reservoir 86, and an inking pad 112 extending round the body and receiving ink from the compartments through radial openings 100, 104. By turning the sleeve 102 and pad 112 relative to the shell 76 the effective size of the openings through which the ink is fed from the compartments 80 may be varied. The cylindrical body is divided up into compartments 80 by partitions 78 and is mounted on a hollow axle 70 which has openings 92, 96 communicating with the uppermost and lowermost compartments which are used to supply ink to the uppermost compartment and to give an indication of when all the compartments are full respectively. The stencil roller 68 is mounted on a support arm 26 adjustably positioned on a post 22, Fig. 2, and articles A on a conveyer C are moved by and frictionally engage the rims 128 of the roller. The roller 68 is held against rotation through the friction disc clutches 130 of the roller by a latch 136 pressed by a spring 140 into a recess in the roller 68. After an article A has engaged the rims 128 it closes a switch and momentarily energizes a solenoid 148 which retracts the latch 136 and allows the stencil to complete one revolution. |
