<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a speed detection device for accurately detecting real speed of a moving member in a short time, a moving member carrier unit having the speed detection device, and an image forming apparatus having the moving member carrier unit. <P>SOLUTION: A speed detection device 50 acquires image data D which photographs a part irradiated with a laser beam L in a moving member E every acquisition cycle T, extracts first part data D1 corresponding to a partial area A1 in an image GäN} of a piece of image data DäN}, extracts second partial data D2 corresponding to another partial area A2 on the downstream side of the partial area A1 in an image GäN+1} of other image data DäN+1}, and detects real speed Vr of the moving member E on the basis of the first partial data D1 and the second partial data D2.
