<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a constant interval between sheets without electrically controlling the drive of a driving means that inputs the drive to a conveying means for conveying the sheets. <P>SOLUTION: A first transfer gear 53 and a second transfer gear 54, which are axially slidable, are connected to a pickup roller 51 and a document feeding roller 52. The transfer gears have a first position where the drive from a motor 7 is transmitted to each roller in an axial direction, and a second position where, when each roller receives a torque from the sheet conveyed by a conveying roller on the downstream side in a sheet conveying direction at a high speed, the drive from the motor 7 is shut off, and each roller is idled.
