<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the number of gradations which can be represented. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal panel 100 is viewed through blocking means which blocks the field of view in a preliminarily determined invisibility period. On the basis of an image signal representing an image divided into a plurality of frames, conversion means 21 converts a gradation value inputted for each frame constituted of a sub-fields, to a sub-field code showing the combination of turning-on/off of b sub-fields (2≤b≤a) included in a visibility period other than the invisibility period and c sub-fields (1≤c≤b) included in the invisibility period.
