<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for tires, which improves abrasion resistance while maintaining or improving good wet grip performance, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same. <P>SOLUTION: The rubber composition includes a rubber component, silica, a diene-based polymer, and aluminum hydroxide. The diene-based polymer is a modified diene-based polymer, obtained by reacting (A) and (B), and has a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 100,000. The content of the diene-based polymer is 2 to 200 pts.mass to 100 pts.mass of the rubber component. (A): an active conjugated diene-based polymer which is obtained by polymerizing a conjugated diene monomer or a conjugated diene monomer and an aromatic vinyl monomer in the presence of (C), and has an alkali metal terminal. (B): a modifier having a functional group. (C): a chemical species obtained by reacting a compound represented by formula (1) and an organic alkali metal compound. In the formula (1), R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>are the same or different and represent hydrogen atom, branched or non-branched alkyl group, branched or non-branched aryl group, branched or non-branched alkoxy group, branched or non-branched silyloxy group, branched or non-branched acetal group, carboxyl group, mercapto group or one of their derivatives.
