<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow sales of a commodity to be easily registered in a short time. <P>SOLUTION: A reading device comprises: imaging means; identification means; reading means; and recognition means. The imaging means images a commodity to acquire an image. The identification means identifies from which area of the image acquired by the imaging means commodity information can be read, from a first area for reading commodity information from a code symbol or a second area for reading commodity information from a commodity image. The first reading means reads the commodity information from a code symbol in the image acquired by the imaging means when it is identified that the commodity information can be read from the first area.
