<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify the pages of even sheets of various sizes. <P>SOLUTION: An image reader comprises: an imaging section 35 for taking an image of a characteristic code provided to each page of sheets; and a sheet receiving section 30 which is provided with the imaging section in accordance with the position of the code and regulates the position and angle of the sheet in accordance with the size of the sheet. The sheet receiving section 30 is provided movably on the sheet platen 10 and has a nearly L-shaped cross section. The imaging section 35 is provided on a surface opposite to the platen 10 and receives the end face of the sheet with a surface orthogonal to the opposite surface.
