An aircraft cockpit display (22) includes among other things an LCD panel (24) having a liquid crystal matrix, and an LED backlight (40) having an array of LEDs for illuminating the liquid crystal matrix. The remainder of the display (22) allows for single point failures within the architecture without impacting the primary display functions of the LCD panel (24).
