White balance correction is carried out for RGB color signals output from an imaging element having a special color filter array wherein red, green, and blue (RGB) color filters are arranged on each line and the ratio of red, green, and blue color filters differs line by line. In the calculation of a WB gain to be used in the white balance correction, not all the pixels of the imaging element are used, thinning read-out for a predetermined line is performed, and the WB gain is calculated on the basis of color signals on the predetermined line of the thinning read-out. Under capturing conditions (a lens f-number and a zoom position) with a large amount of color mixture, a line with a small amount of color mixture is selected as the predetermined line to be thinned out. Under capturing conditions with a low amount of color mixture, a line with a more even ratio for the red, green, and blue color filters is selected as the predetermined line to be thinned out.
|
