878,042. Mass spectrometers. OSTERREICHISCHE STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR ATOMENERGIE G.m.b.H. June 6, 1958 [June 6, 1957], No. 18161/58. Class 39(1). A non-magnetic mass spectrometer comprises high-frequency modulating systems M1, M2, M3, Fig. 1 and an electrostatic deflecting system formed by the plates 2, 3 and 2, 4 of a parallel plate condenser plates 3 and 4 forming an integral construction. The spacing between the modulating systems is so arranged that only ions which gain maximum energy from the high-frequency fields pass through to the collector C. The modulating systems consist of high-frequency plates 7 between grounded plates 8 and 9. Plates 7 may be asymmetrically located relative to the outer plates in order to obtain an optimum transit time for the particles as regards maximum energy gain or loss. In a modification, Fig. 3, the ions are deflected by the plates 11, 12 of three cylindrical condensers. If more than three modulator systems are used, delay lines may be inserted between them. |
