The invention relates to a method for detecting a measurement error during the determination of the speed of a vehicle (10) and/or the determination of a distance travelled by the vehicle (10), said method allowing measurement errors to be detected in a comparatively simple and yet reliable way. According to the invention, the speed of the vehicle (10) is determined by means of a vehicle-mounted optical sensor device (20), and a measurement error is detected on the basis of a component of the determined speed which deviates from the direction of movement of the vehicle (10). In particular with railway vehicles, a measurement error is detected when a sensor determining the speed in the direction extending transverse to the direction of the rail outputs a measurement signal indicating a movement in said transverse direction. The invention also relates to a vehicle-mounted device (25) for determining the speed of a vehicle (10) and/or determining a distance travelled by the vehicle (10).
