The purpose of the present invention is to provide a lithium ion secondary battery which has a long service life. The present invention is a lithium ion secondary battery (100) which comprises a positive electrode (7) that is capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium ions, a negative electrode (8) that is capable of absorbing and desorbing lithium ions, and a nonaqueous electrolyte solution that contains a lithium salt, said lithium ion secondary battery (100) able to be reversibly charged and discharged. The lithium ion secondary battery (100) is characterized in that: the positive electrode (7) contains a metal plate (1), a metal film (2) that is formed on the surface of the metal plate (1), and a positive electrode active material (3); the metal film (2) contains one or more metals that are selected from the group consisting of (111)-oriented ruthenium, osmium, palladium and platinum; the positive electrode active material (3) is a compound represented by formula (1) and is formed on the surface of the metal film (2) by epitaxial growth; and the positive electrode active material (3) is formed so that the c-axis of the crystal structure of the positive electrode active material (3) is perpendicular to the metal film (2).
