<PICT:0961565/C6-C7/1> Potassium is prepared by vacuum heating an intimate mixture of calcium carbide and a potassium halide, the mixture having a weight ratio of carbide to halide between 1:1.5 and 1:4. The mixture may contain 0.005-10% by weight of iron as a catalyst. Tablets made from reactants are placed on the grate 2, a vacuum is applied at 10 and the device is heated in a furnace. Alkali metal halide condenses on the inside of chamber 4 and solid impurities are separated into zone 6. The potassium condenses on the inside of vessel 7. The device may be rotated about a shaft 8 so that loading and unloading of the reactants and products may be effected in different directions. |
