The machine (1) has a stator (3) with a stator winding, and a rotor (5) including permanent magnets (14). The magnets generate magnetic fluxes crossing the stator winding. The rotor comprises a field excitation coil (12). A contact less energy transmission device includes a transmission element (21) connected integrally in rotation to the rotor, and another transmission element (22) for allowing a contact less energy transmission for supplying energy to the coil. An inverter (30) is arranged to make current flow in a positive or negative manner in the coil via the transmission device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a synchronous machine.
