<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce optimally compressed data by a plurality of types of compression using different algorithms. <P>SOLUTION: A size comparison section 19 notifies an access control section 20 of a minimum size of compressed data generated by compression of a block 12a in compression processing sections 14A-14D, an algorithm name indicating the compression processing section 14 that has generated the minimum size of compressed data, and the like. In response to the notification, the access control section 20 selects compressed data to be written to a tape medium 30, and notifies the algorithm name indicating the compression processing section 14 that has generated the compressed data to a statistical information processing section 21. The statistical information processing section 21 extracts a regularity present in the result of selection of compressed data on the basis of the notified algorithm name, and according to the extracted regularity, specifies and stops a compression processing section 14 to be stopped.
