A polymerization catalyst for olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons comprises (a) an organometallic compound in which the metal is selected from Group IIA, IIB and IIIA of the Periodic Table in Deming's "General Chemistry" (5th Ed.), (b) a metal halide of a metal selected from Group IVB, VB, or VIB of the same Periodic Table, and (c) an aminoalcohol which contains a single amino nitrogen atom and 1 or 2 hydroxy groups, the hydroxy and amino groups being separated by an alkylene radical having not more than three carbon atoms between the hydroxy and amino groups. Component (a) may be dimethyl or diethyl, or diisobutylcadmium, diethyl or dibutyl zinc, diisobutylaluminium hydride, diethylaluminium hydride, trimethyl, ethyl, propyl, or isobutyl aluminium, diethyl aluminium chloride, tricyclohexylaluminium, diphenyl cadmium, or dinaphthylzinc. Component (b) may be a chloride or bromide of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten, preferably titanium trichloride, or vanadium trichloride. Component may be 2-diethylamino-ethanol, 3 -din-butylamino -1- propanol, 3-dimethylamino-1, 2-propanediol, 2-dimethylaminoethanol, methyldiethanolamine, 2-dimethylamino -2-propanol, and 1-dimethylamino -2- propanol. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The olefinic hydrocarbon may be ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, 4-methyl -1- pentene, vinyl cyclohexane, styrene, isoprene, butadiene, chloroprene, methoxybutadiene, or piperylene. |
