<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic device having a dictionary function with which a search character string can be easily and accurately entered and searched even if the search character string is a compound word consisting of a number of characters. <P>SOLUTION: Every time when a character of a desired search word is entered in a search word input area ka on a main display unit 16 (dictionary search screen G) in the case of entering the characters of the word one by one in order, entry words whose first parts correspond to the input search characters (string) are searched and displayed in an entry word list area ma. At the same time, compound words that include the respective retrieved entry words as modifying components are searched, and the modifying components of the respective compound words are extracted and displayed in a list form in a modifying component list screen GF on a sub display unit 15.
