[Also in Division B5] A tufted carpet is made self-adhesive by the application of an adhesive composition, the exposed surface of the adhesive being protected by a layer of anti-adhesive material. The adhesive contains per 100 parts by weight, 15/30 parts of adhesive thermoplastic polymers such as natural rubbers, synthetic rubbers or plasticized vinyl plastomers such as polyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates particularly polybutylacrylate, 5/10 parts of hard thermoplastic polymers comprising at least one non-plasticized vinyl plastomer such as polymethylacrylate, polymethyl methacrylate, 5/10 parts of flexible thermoplastic polymers comprising at least one polyvinyl ester such as polyalkylacrylate or methacrylate, 0.5/1 part of a thickener comprising at least one of ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, an alginate, salt of polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid or the salts of co-polymers of said acids with other polymerizable monomers, 0.5/1 part of emulsifier comprising at least one anionic or non-ionic emulsifier and 58/74 parts of water. Optionally, 20/100 parts of fillers and/or pigments may be added per 100 parts of adhesive composition. The adhesive may be that which anchors the tufts of the carpet. The protective layer of anti-adhesive material may be of waxedpaper, a cellulose ether or ester, or polyethylene. The adhesive is applied to the carpet at normal temperatures, and the water content is removed by heating, as on a tenter; the anti-adhesive layer is then applied.</p> |
