<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system notifying of necessity of cleaning or replacing ducts due to accumulation of contaminant deposits. <P>SOLUTION: The system for detecting a contamination state in a duct includes: a member having a surface to be disposed in an exhaust flow; a light source configured to guide light towards the surface of the member; and a control unit for generating a signal that represents the contamination state of the surface by a change in a surface property representing the contamination. The surface is any one of a mirror, a diffuse reflection device, and a retroreflective device member such that the light is reflected and returned to a detector. Both the detector and the light source are located facing the surface. The member is disposed at a single access opening provided in the duct wall. The member is attached to the light source and the detector by a lower profile arm such that the member is located inside the duct by the lower profile arm extending from the single opening.
