PURPOSE: A composition containing syringaresinol as an active ingredient is provided to suppress melanogenesis and tyrosinase activity, and to ensure anti-oxidation and skin whitening. CONSTITUTION: A composition for skin whitening contains 0.001-20wt% of syringaresinol as an active ingredient. The composition enhances the brightness and uniformity of skin color. The composition treats hyperpigmentation. The hyperpigmentation includes melasma, seborrheic keratosis, freckle, nevus, and dark circle. Syringaresinol is contained in an extract selected among a lindseed extract, a Phellodendri cortex extract, an Acanthopanacis cortex extract, a sesame extract, and a ginseng fruit extract.
